Description:

The Willie Greens Organic Farm Project will allow Snohomish County to purchase the development rights on 42 acres of regionally important farmland through its Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) program. The PDR program was specifically designed to preserve farmland and revive agriculture in the unique and fertile Tualco Valley, a historically farmed area that is experiencing increased development pressure. The program was developed with input from government agencies, farm organizations, and the local agricultural community.

Willie Greens currently grows 50+ varieties of organic fruits, vegetables, and berries and wholesales them to Seattle area companies and at regional farmers’ markets. The farm also sells produce through its winter CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) subscription program. Willie Greens is located less than two miles south of Monroe and is adjacent to a 63-acre farm that is already protected by a PDR easement. The soils on the farm are classified as Prime Farmland Soils by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Recently, the NRCS selected Willie Greens for preservation under the Farm and Ranchland Protection Program. This program will provide a local acquisition match of $78,210 if the proposed project is approved.

Willie Greens’ commitment to sustainable farming practices, combined with the farm's highly productive soils, proximity to major markets, and extensive infrastructure make the farm a valuable component of Snohomish County's agricultural economy.
