Description:

The scope of this project is to purchase development rights on 1,229 acres of private livestock grazing land, in the rapidly developing Rattlesnake Hills of Yakima Conty.  The South-Central Washington Shrub Steppe and Rangeland Conservation Partnership considers the area a high conservation priority.  Maintaining and enhancing ranching, open space and wildlife habitat is the goal of the Partnership.  The landowner requested a conservation easement to counteract offers from a land developer who is building a wine touring and golf course resort.  Nearly half of the acres on the property are ranked as farmland of statewide importance capable of producing high value irrigated crops.  Remaining acres produce valuable livestock forage.  Grazing preservation on this private land will influence security of grazing on an additional 2,480 acres of adjacent public land.  The property is strategically positioned within a key habitat corridor that connects the last remaining large shrub steppe properties in Washington.  Greater Sage-Grouse, Jackrabbits, and Ferruginous Hawks among other species will benefit by protecting this property from subdivision and development.  The landowner wishes to permit public access that is compatible with grazing.  Citizens will be able to observe and develop an appreciation for sustainable working rangelands, and gain outstanding views of Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier.  Additional phases will be implemented as new working rangeland protection opportunities arise within the Rattlesnake Hills region.

WHAT IS THE WWRP?

The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) is a state grant program that creates and conserves local and state parks, wildlife habitat and working farms. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office administers WWRP grants, and the legislature funds the program.
