Biderbost Farm
Description:
The Biderbost Farm Project will allow Snohomish County to purchase the development rights on 59 acres of regionally important farmland through its Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) program. The PDR program was specifically designed to preserve farmland and revive agriculture in the unique and fertile Tualco Valley, a historically farmed area that is experiencing increased development pressure. The program was developed with input from government agencies, farm organizations, and the local agricultural community.
The Biderbost farm was established in 1948 and is currently used to provide forage for livestock. The farm is located only a half mile south of Monroe and is adjacent to a 65-acre property that will be converted to nonagricultural uses within the next three to five years. The soils on the farm are classified as Prime Farmland Soils by the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Recently, the NRCS selected the Biderbost Farm for preservation under the Farm and Ranchland Protection Program. This program will provide a local acquisition match of $280,710 if the Biderbost Farm Project is approved.
The Biderbost family has been farming in the Tualco Valley area for 100 years. Their long-term commitment to farming, combined with the farm's highly productive soils, proximity to major markets, water rights, and existing infrastructure make the Biderbost farm a valuable component of Snohomish County's agricultural economy.
