WWRP Applicant: Snohomish County Parks Dept
RCO Project Number: 98-1250
County: Snohomish
Legislative District: 39th
WWRP Category: Local Parks
WWRP Grant: $300,000
Applicant Match: $350,420
Project Type: Development
Date Funded: 1999

Description:

The goal of this development project is to construct a much needed baseball field for and in partnership with the Darrington Community, which is located 27 miles east of Arlington along State Highway 530 in northeast Snohomish County. The Community's existing fields are all tightly located on the high school campus. The only full size baseball field is scheduled with priority use for boys Varsity and Jr. Varsity teams. The school also owns a 60' baseline field for boys' Little League use, which will be converted to other uses in the next two years. Girls' softball teams must vie for practice time on two undrained, unirrigated areas known as the "cow pasture" fields. Due to the limited space available at the high school, practicing teams must frequently play into each other's outfields. An additional field - the first of three planned at the new Whitehorse Community Park - will effectively double the community's playspace, and ensure that girl's sports teams and adult leagues can also take advantage of quality playing conditions. Phase 1 consists of one full size (90' baseline) drained, irrigated baseball field and gravel parking lot for 90 cars. Accessory features include a playground, picnic tables, and benches. Future phases will complete two additional baseball fields, and one adult soccer field. The Town of Darrington and the surrounding community enthusiastically support the project, and have offered a significant amount of donated labor and equipment.
