Waterfront Acquisition, Allyn

WWRP Applicant: Port of Allyn
RCO Project Number: 00-1562
County: Mason
Legislative District: 35th
WWRP Category: Water Access
WWRP Grant: $96,064
Applicant Match: $132,790
Project Type: Combined
Date Funded: 2002

Description:

This project will acquire 450 feet of waterfront in Allyn for a kayak park and public access. The property has 300' of sand/rock beach, which is ideal for hand launch craft, swimming and playing on the beach. North Bay is primarily "muck" which makes it inadequate for these uses. The port will remove a house and shed and 6' fence; build a small picnic shelter and unisex restroom; hook into the new sewer system; provide a path to the beach for greater access; install security lighting; provide interpretive/educational signs with information on adjoining shore and tidelands; and include a map to nearby Sherwood Creek with information on fish enhancement efforts at the creek and wetlands. There are 5 parcels of land adjacent to SR3; 2 lots (150') are uplands with a rock bulkhead; the other 3 lots (300' of beach) are owned by different people. The upland lots have estimated value of $140-150,000; the beach lots cannot be developed, however, they have considerable utility value for public access once the uplands are acquired. Acquisition is urgent as this is in a UGA with sewers to be completed in 2001. At that time it is likely someone will acquire all 5 lots and it will be lost to public use.
