Spokane Whitewater Park
Description:
The project has its origins in the Conceptual Plan and Strategic Master Plan for the Great Spokane River Gorge, a regional greenbelt first conceived in 1907 by the sons of Fredrick Law Olmstead. The plan documents were completed in 2002 (Conceptual) and 2005 (Master Plan), through a 5 year collaborative, public process led by the Friends of the Falls Association, and supported by the Spokane Parks Dept and 35 regional stakeholders including adjacent neighborhoods and the Spokane Tribe. The full Conceptual Plan and Strategic Master Plan both support this application and are available from the Friends of the Falls web site, www.friendsofthefalls.org. The project is to construct two whitewater features in the Spokane River, and to improve existing parking, build access trails and provide an interpretive kiosk/restroom facility on the adjacent south bank of the river. The site is near the Sandifur Memorial Bridge, about one mile west of Downtown Spokane, and is at the hub of a regional trail network. Whitewater features are constructed from native rock grouted with concrete, and arranged in a double "U" configuration just downstream of the bridge. The project includes structures for erosion control, and will create drops and pools in the river to improve fish habitat. The project will remove 5 abandoned concrete railroad bridge piers which pose a safety hazard to boaters. Projects of similar design have been constructed in 32 cities throughout the US. A design study and report on the specifics of construction is attached.
