Description:

The scope of this project is to acquire and preserve the proposed (0.23 acres) parcel along Shell Creek for the purposes of Urban Wildlife Habitat. The City of Edmonds recognizes the need to conserve open space, especially in this highly urbanized environment. Preservation of remaining open space opportunities, particularly those with critical features, such as stream corridors and wildlife habitats, is a recurring theme and priority in the City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Comprehensive Plan. With increased pressure to build on what were previously considered "unbuildable" lots due to the cost of slope stabilization or mitigation needed to secure variances, the City feels this property, and those surrounding it, are important to pursue and add to the community's inventory. In unison with the immediate three acres of wetland and the continuation of this natural corridor through the adjacent 48 acre Yost Park, this property provides an important wildlife link highly visible to the community. This acquisition contains a number of important habitat features such as wetlands, woodlands and stream habitat for a variety of species.
