Description:

The City of Castle Rock and the School District intend to develop a riverfront trail system along 7,420 feet of Cowlitz River frontage created from dredge spoils following the eruption of Mt. St. Helens. The trail would connect natural features with community and recreational facilities. There are no public trails to serve approximately 7,770 residents within our 110 square mile service area. Residents must travel to other area for trail experiences. A recent survey of 14 community organizations and 245 citizens found the need for trails to be to be very high on the list, second only to the need for additional picnicking facilities. The City of Castle Rock's Park and Recreation Plan identifies a current need of 2.8 miles of trail to serve our citizens, based on the 1979 IAC participation ratio. The proposed project would meet 1.41 miles of this current need, and in the process transform the dredge spoils into a useful community asset. While the Castle Rock community does not have financial resources to develop a project of this magnitude, we already experienced broad volunteer participation from civic, community, business, government and youth organizations involved in project planning and site preparation. Adequate financial resources will allow continued community involvement in completing this phase of the Park Plan.
