More public water accesses for recreation uses was identified by citizen input as a very high priority during the public hearing adoption process of the Spokane County Park Plan. This project will meet this need by acquiring a 117 acre parcel of land including over 3,000 feet of shoreline frontage along Newman Lake, the largest lake in Spokane County. The site's varied characteristics provides an excellent opportunity for all water recreation uses such as a non-motorized boat and floating vessels launch, fishing, swimming, snorkling, and exploration along old logging roads that serve as trails meandering throughout the property. In addition to providing water access recreation the property offers picnicking and wildlife observation for the non-motorized boaters with spectacular views from scenic hilly upland forested areas, to riparian areas and wetlands along the waters edge of Newman Lake. The property has been selectively logged over the last three years and two-ten acre parcels have recently been sold for homes. The Newman Lake Property Owners Association has been in existence for over 50 years and has offered to care for the property through patrolling, litter pick-up, restoration projects, community education and outreach programs. The Conservation Futures Program will be used as local matching funds and will acquire an additional 304 acres of wetlands, meadows and timbered uplands.
