NWMC Shoreline Access Improvements
Description:
This project develops the water access elements of a new waterfront facility, the Northwest Maritime Center in the City of Port Townsend. The 2-acre site, purchased in 2000 with the help of IAC water access acquisition funds, fronts a popular, heavily trafficked, but underutilized downtown beach in the heart of Port Townsend's National Landmark Historic District. Water access will be substantially improved through construction of 1) a 14-ft wide public boardwalk along the beach; 2) a hand boat launch and pedestrian ADA ramp to the beach; 3) sitting and walking steps to the beach; 4) a kayak and small-boat staging platform; and 5) beach ecological improvements. Paved areas connecting Water Street to the public boardwalk will facilitate use of and access to a 20,000-sq-ft outdoor commons area, a public dock including kayak/dinghy floats, and the Port of Port Townsend's jetty walkway facility. This project expands existing water access opportunities for a variety of users, including picnickers; viewers; scuba divers; and kayakers, rowers and other boaters. The shoreline improvements will provide easy access to the educational, cultural and on-the-water programs offered at the Northwest Maritime Center. They will also provide for a continuous public access link along the shoreline between Port Townsend's historic downtown and the Point Hudson marina, thereby implementing the "Waterwalk" in the city's comprehensive plan.
