With this project, the City of Milton will acquire 19.88 acres of the abandoned Interurban Railroad right of way and develop along with an existing 1.74 mile City owned right of way, into a regional trail network. The City of Milton has engaged in public workshops and trail walks to facilitate public involvement into the planning process for this important resource. The result was the preparation of the Interurban Trail Master Plan that identifies that the trail will be developed to provide active recreational opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists as well as passive recreational activities with interpretive viewpoints and picnic areas. Development of the trail will provide a valuable community asset that will extend far beyond the corporate boundaries of the City of Milton. The trail is supported by in the 1997 Pierce County Nonmotorized Transportation Plan, the Puget Sound Regional Council's 1995 Metropolitan Transportation Plan Nonmotorized Section, and the King County Non Motorized Transportation Plan. The trail will ultimately connect west through the City of Fife future to the Port of Tacoma westward to the Tacoma waterfront, and east through the City of Edgewood into the Sumner Pacific Trail and ultimately northward through the Kent Valley into the King County Regional Trail Network. Connection through the City of Edgewood will also extend southward to the Puyallup River Trail.
