Description:

The McLane Creek Nature Trail is located along the eastern most edge of Capitol State Forest. The site provides a unique combination of family friendly hiking trails, and quick easy access to views of freshwater wetland beaver ponds, salmon and bird habitat, and a low elevation forest ecosystem. Each year in the fall, salmon return to McLane Creek to spawn. This annual event attracts thousands of interested visitors and school groups to this popular outdoor nature area in the Capitol State Forest. McLane Creek Nature Trail serves as an excellent, easily accessible outdoor classroom for numerous local schools. This proposal is part of a long-term renovation process needed to preserve safe public access opportunities and protect natural resources. The project would address structural concerns, add amenities that support educational viewing and stream ecology interpretation, increase natural resource protection of the site, and imporve site function and user experience. The facility is near capacity during the summer and fall months and is in great need of renovation. Needs addressed with this proposal include: replacing an aging log bridge, building an educational viewing platform to minimize damage to sensitive streamside vegetation and soil, redevelopment of the site entry by adding a covered structure for group gatherings and a site infomation board, development of a new trail, and replacing/ relocating the restroom.
