Description:

The Kiwanis Park project is a multi-use facility designed to provide a diversity of passive and active recreational opportunities. Program elements include an extensive wetland trails system around a basketball court, a little league field, a multi-purpose field, as well as a restroom, bbq area, and picnic shelter. The main objective for this project is to provide an increased opportunity for recreation to a diverse cross section of the city population. The park is located in the very center of the residential portion of the city and bordered by single family residences, multi-family housing, and four senior housing communities. Historically there has been very little park development in this area. The City of Mount Vernon has owned the land for several years and has been slowly developing plans and collecting project partners to move toward the final goal of a fully developed park. With the identification of a significant finanical contibution from a local Kiwanis Club and some accumulated capital development funds, the park is just a grant away from groundbreaking. The plan is unanimously supported by elected officials, neighbors, and civic leaders who all participated in an extensive public process. It is envisioned that the park will be a central and connected part of this cities community and crossroads for a great diversity of users from various generational, cultural, and socio-econimic backgrounds.
