Description:

The Heron Trail, located within the City of Moses Lake, when completed will provide a 10 foot wide, 1.2 mile long nature trail that will serve as a pedestrian path and a connector between parks and key locations throughout the City. The trail will combine a conventional asphalt trail with several boardwalk segments. The boardwalks will add to the experience of crossing the local wetlands while protecting and preserving the natural habitat that surrounds the trail. Two parcels of land will be acquired for the boardwalk trail route, along with an easement through a third parcel which will allow access to McCosh Park. The central hub for Heron Trail is McCosh Park, which is the most active waterfront park in Moses Lake. Located in the downtown area, McCosh Park is home of the Moses Lake Aquatic Center and contains an amphitheater, basketball courts, tennis courts, playground, restrooms, and the old Swedberg pool house. Within the park, Heron Trail will follow the northern shoreline of Pelican Horn and connect to the Japanese Gardens, Frontier Middle School, downtown shopping and dining facilities, residential neighborhoods, and other trailheads. Approximately 1,600 lineal feet of the Heron Trail between McCosh Park and the Japanese Gardens will be constructed of boardwalk segments to cross portions of the lake and low-lying grassy wetlands. The boardwalk includes two platforms for viewing fauna and flora adjacent to the trail.
