Harbor Family Park Acquisition
Description:
Harbor Family Park is a 18-acre acquisition located at the northeast corner of the intersection of 70th Ave and 32nd Street NW. The location is on the primary arterial to Fox Island in the Gig Harbor Peninsula area of Pierce County, 3.7 miles from Highway 16. The site was identified for acquisition in the 2000 Gig Harbor Community Plan and in the 2006 PenMet Parks Comprehensive Parks, Open Space and Recreation Plan. The property was acquired from a developer by five families who formed Harbor Family Park, LLC in order to give the community and PenMet Parks an 18-month window to purchase the property. If funding fails to materialize, the property will be placed back on the market for development of housing. The property is generally flat with a slight slope and one small wetland area. The surrounding area is the most densely populated area of the Gig Harbor Peninsula outside of the City of Gig Harbor, with a public elementary school and a private elementary school nearby. The area is identified in current plans as significantly underserved by park facilities. There are 0.73 acres of the property that are not part of this grant proposal due to the potential siting of a concession stand or other walled structure. PenMet Parks has conducted three public workshops to assess community interest and develop a conceptual design for the park.
