Evergreen Park, Ph 2 (Smith Cove Area)

WWRP Applicant: Bremerton Parks & Rec Dept
RCO Project Number: 98-1242
County: Kitsap
Legislative District: 26th
WWRP Category: Local Parks
WWRP Grant: $276,306
Applicant Match: $784,486
Recipient Match: $784,486
Project Type: Development
Date Funded: 1999

Description:

Renovation of the south east portion of the existing 2.5 acres and development of 4.5 acres of newly acquired property around Smith Cove (adjacent to Evergreen Park) When completed it will provide an amphitheater for concerts and events, add 2 playfield areas, new picnic shelter and restrooms at the south end, continue the shoreline and uplands walking path by 1,760 linear feet, reconfigure the boat launch parking lot, and add parking. This is an exciting project because it eliminates an industrial brown field conveying the property to public use with a great variety of recreational opportunities. The continuation of the walking trail connecting to the new Smith Cove portion allows user-friendly and barrier free access to waterfront and park features. Trails naturally "lead" people to locations and recreational opportunities. The trails divide activities so as to not distract users but provide buffers between areas. The new restroom is located to provide users at the far end of Evergreen Park access to necessary facilities. It is placed at the east end of the ampitheater and playfield near the picnic shelter and next to the trail. This facility will not conflict with waterfront viewing. The parking is located away from the waterfront, alleviating congestion in the boat launch area and minimizing detraction from the scenic features. It eliminates crowded on-street congestion and provides safer access to Evergreen Park. Evergreen Park maintains passive areas.
