Des Moines Sports Park Acquisition
Description:
This Des Moines Sports Park project will acquire 15.22 acres of land. The proposed acquisition site is the last undeveloped property in Des Moines large enough to accommodate an active recreation facility. Future development plans include sports fields, sports courts, perimeter walking trail, a concession, restroom and maintenance building, play equipment, picnicking and adequate parking. Currently, the City of Des Moines has two undersized lighted youth sports fields and one leased school field for 28,000 population. In 1996, Des Moines completed a Park and Recreation Master Planning process. The study demonstrated the need for 22 acres of land for sports fields and showed there is an 18 acre shortage. The combined number of city and school fields is woefully insufficient to accommodate league sports participation. Hundreds of participants play on dangerously worn fields, are forced to recreate in neighboring cities, and a significant segment of the community remains unserved. In 1996, Des Moines City Council endorsed land acquisition for sports fields as a number one priority.
