Buckley to South Prairie Foothills Trail
Description:
The Buckley to South Prairie section of the Foothills Trail is approximately 3.6 miles long. The entire Foothills Trail is approximately 30 miles in length. Presently, there are nine miles of completed trail in three separate areas. This trail section extends from South Prairie Creek in the Town of South Prairie to Junkyard Road west of Buckley. When completed, this section will connect two existing sections of completed trail. Construction of this section of trail is scheduled for 2004. It will be the final section of the Foothills Trail on the mainline section between Buckley and South Hill Puyallup. The completed sections of the Foothills Trail are extremely popular and well supported throughout Pierce County. Using an electronic counter, we have experienced some weekends in which 3,000 users have been counted on the trail. There is also a citizens support organization identified as the Foothills Rails to Trails Coalition with about 900 paid members. The Rails to Trails Coalition raises money and assists Pierce County in supporting the development of the Foothills Trail. This section of trail has one renovated trestle, two newly built trestles and will require two additional trestles. Pierce County is presently acquiring the final parcels of property in this section.
