Description:

Bonnie Rae Park is located in the fastest growing portion of the City of Mount Vernon and is an idyllic departure from the urban development that surrounds it. The park is 10.2 acres in size, with 5 acres of manicured upland meadow and 5 acres of majestic forest. The woodland area is bisected by a salmon bearing stream, Maddox Creek, located in a deep ravine. The forest is composed of a complex arrangment of forested wetlands, fern glens among giant cedars, and occasional alder groves. Park planning to date calls for a mix of active and passive recreation. Uses in the large upland area might include a multi use 'sports meadow', group picnic shelter, and a BBQ. A neighborhood park is thought to be well suited to the area immediately adjacent to an existing housing development. An extensive woodland trails network is envisioned through the forested ravine. It is expected that Bonnie Rae Park will become a cherished and important asset for park users. If this site is not purchased for park use, then it certainly will be converted to single family homes as it is zoned for. As a park, education and interpretation opportunities will be taken advantage of throughout the site in addition to active recreation programming. The diversity of character and natural resources this site possesses offers something for everyone to enjoy and its location within dense city housing makes it truly unique.
