WWRP Grant: $89,331

Date Funded: 2005

Description:

Blakely Harbor Park is a popular destination for day time boaters, kayakers, beach enthusiasts, walkers and about 3,000 students annually participating in Puget Sound's regional environmental learning seminars at IslandWood located adjacent to this park. If funded, this project would provide two vault restrooms, storage, parking, ADA access, historical and environmental interpretation, trails and a bridge. Proposed site development will allow for the two park zones to be directly accessed. Currently, park users need to cross to exit the park and re-enter to experience both the uplands and saltwater park segments. The site will be tied also to an adjoining cultural site, Yama, now being purchased. The surrounding area benefits the park with two new trail connections that directly link the park to Fort Ward State Park, IslandWood, and area neighborhoods to the west, north and south. Site development has received endorsement from IslandWood, a non-profit environmental learning center dedicated to elementary students, Washington Water Trails, and the Bainbridge Island Land Trust.
