State House Proposes $100 Million for WWRP Grants
Yesterday the House passed a two-year capital budget out of committee that doubles funding for the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP). If approved, this would fund 133 projects including new state and local parks, wildlife habitat, farmland preservation and shoreline protection.The House budget is scheduled to pass early next week. Funding is not yet secure in the Senate, which releases its version of the budget Tuesday. See the Coalition's website for regular updates.

On March 31 Richland residents join the Trust for Public Land and Tapteal Greenway Association to celebrate their effort to preserve Amon Creek, a wildlife corridor complete with valuable wetlands, shrub-steppe, and stream side habitat. Click here for event details.If the legislature funds the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program at $100 million next month, the City of Richland receives a $405,000 WWRP grant to preserve 60 acres along the west leg of Amon Creek.
Coalition Welcomes New Board Members
At its February meeting, the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition’s Board of Directors elected four new members:- Betty Jean "B.J." Brooks is interim-Superintendent of Seattle Parks and Recreation. Before moving to Seattle three years ago, BJ managed the Denver Parks Department.
- Mark Doumit of Cathlamet is Director of the Washington Forest Protection Association. A farmer and commercial fisherman, Doumit served in the state legislature for ten years and on the Wahkiakum County Commission for eight.
- Kathe Fowler of Woodinville chairs Washington Conservation Voters and is an active volunteer in the community.
- Court Stanley of Centralia is President of Port Blakely Tree Farms where he's worked since 1985.
