WWRP Grant Preserves Skookumchuck Ranch

The Skookumchuck Ranch Project in Kittitas County is a premier example of how the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition enables landowners, land trusts, and the state to work together to protect some of the most valuable wildlife habitat in the state.

A $3.1 million Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program grant helped the Trust for Public Land and the Department of Fish and Wildlife work with a central Washington ranching family to achieve their goal of permanently protecting their land from development and degradation.

This land was adjacent to other protected areas and now ties together over 17,500 acres of prime habitat used by elk, deer, endangered steelhead and sage grouse, plus hikers, hunters, bird watchers and nature lovers. It contains habitat for wildlife at high and low elevations as well as healthy streams and rivers.

The Trust for Public Land and others will host a celebration of this achievement on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007. Read more about the Skookumchuck project.

Issaquah High Point Trail

Bikers and trail users in King County are celebrating the Issaquah High Point Connector Trail project. This project fills one of the six gaps in the I-90 Trail/Mountains to Sound Greenway Trails System that begins at the Seattle waterfront and follows I-90 across the Cascade Mountain Range to the Columbia River. The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program contributed a $108,924 grant to the project.  The ribbon cutting celebration was on November 28. Read more about the Issaquah High Point Trail.

Help Us Protect and Preserve Our Favorite Places!

Every month, we highlight projects for you that demonstrate the incredible work the Coalition accomplishes. No other organization can take credit for such a diverse list of accomplishments - from trails to salmon streams to organic farms - that maintain our health and high quality of life.

Please give a year end gift to the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition so that we can continue to make a difference in your community! The Coalition is a non-profit membership organization which does not receive any of the funding it lobbies for in Olympia, so we rely on the support of members like you.

We're a tiny staff requiring very little overhead cost, so you know your gift to the Coalition will go exactly where you want it to go: back to nature.
